Kitt Shaffer

Kitt Shaffer has painted in oils since high school, with an interest in ceramics beginning in the 1990's in Cambridge and at the Harvard Ceramics Program in Brighton. She has spent time in Grenada in the Caribbean, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, China, and Calabria in the South of Italy, with many drawings (pastel and watercolor) and paintings of these beautiful places. Recently her work has focused on the South Coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and now includes figure drawing and painting, white line prints, collage and painted furniture. Her work is displayed on her website: www.shafferarts.com

Kris Shaffer

I grew up in Kansas and moved to New England during my time at Kansas State University. I transferred to Massachusetts College of Art to study painting. It is interesting to compare the two experiences. K-State was great with space to work and high standards for practical hands-on information like learning to build stretcher bars, stretch canvases and prime them. I was a drawing major there and Mass Art did not offer drawing as a major so I switched to painting. While the art history classes at Mass Art were much better, surprisingly some of the studio classes at K-State were as good and even excelled in certain areas. A lot of my landscapes now are from Kansas. The beauty is stunning. Beauty can be found everywhere, but for me, the grace of the Flint Hills is consistently  breathtaking. Recently I have been exploring watercolors. I am enjoying the quickness, portability and benign nature of the paint, even if it is the most unforgiving of all the mediums! Switching up mediums challenges me to respond to things in a new light. I also went through a brief oil pastel phase that brought me to portraits which I am really enjoying. Figure drawing might be my first love and I haven't been doing enough of it lately!
