Crafting Coasters
With William Gajda
Wednesday, October 21st from 12:30–3:30PM
William Gajda from William Marshall Studio is a retired Mechanical Engineer. Once retired William started a small business as a craftsman. William works with both wood and metal. The focus of this workshop is a wooden coaster set. The goal is for the individual to design and make their own coaster set by using different species of wood. The wood utilized for this workshop may be Cherry, Maple, and Walnut. The result will be a coaster set with 8 coasters. Each coaster will be approximately 4 inch X 4 inch with a thickness of approximately 1/2 inch. These coasters should last a lifetime.
The student will dry fit wood strips in a set of clamps and then measure the dimensions to ensure the width is approximately 4 inches. Each wood strip will be numbered. The strips of wood will then be ready for gluing. Once glued the strips will be placed in a set of clamps and clamped together for a minimum of 8 hours. The next day William will plane and cut the cutting board to the final dimensions. The students will return to the Community Center to pick up their custom coaster set. At that time the student will have the opportunity to burn their name in the wood if they choose to.
