Summer Art Workshops

Creating Cutting Boards

With William Gajda

Friday, August 7th from 1:00–5:00PM

William Gajda from William Marshall Studio is a retired Mechanical Engineer. Once retired William started a small business as a craftsman. William works with both wood and metal. The focus of this workshop is wooden cutting boards. The goal is for the individual to design and make their own cutting board by using different species of wood. The wood utilized for this workshop will be Cherry, Maple, and Walnut. The result will be a cutting board with a length of 12 inches, a width of 6 inches, and a thickness of approximately 1 inch. This cutting board should last a lifetime. The student will dry fit wood strips in a set of clamps and then measure the dimensions to ensure the width is approximately 6 inches. Each wood strip will be numbered. The strips of wood will then be ready for gluing. Once glued the strips will be placed in a set of clamps and clamped together for a minimum of 8 hours. The next day William will plane and cut the cutting board to the final dimensions. The students will return to the Community Center on the following business day to pick up their custom board.
